What is GDN ( Google Display Network ) ?



It is a group of more than 2 million websites, videos, and apps where Google 
ads can appear. These Network sites reach over 90% of Internet users worldwide*. Digital marketer can use targeting to show ads in particular contexts to particular demographics in specific locations, and more.


How do they look ?

You will find these websites with image ads or video ads running on them. In the ad box you will find a text ¨Ads by Google¨. In the example image below, tiny box that you can see with ads for mobile phone is actually on a cars review website. So this website is one of the member of Google Display Network.

What is special about it ?


Running ads of display network is much cheaper in comparison with Search Network. These are most useful for brand awareness. So if your brand or business is new and you want people to know about it in cheapest medium possible, display ads on display network is you go to option.


How do I get charged ?


Usually CPM is the most widely used bidding strategy which is Cost Per Thousand Impression, which means you will be charge equivalent of one click per thousand times your ads have shown.  

What Ad Types can be used ?

Display helps you engage users with attractive ad formats. Available ad types on the Display Network are mentioned below:

  • Responsive Display ads:

    Creating ads is partially automated in this format. To create them, simply enter your ad text, then add your images and logo, and Google will automatically create your ads and improve performance. 

  • Uploaded image ads: 

    To have more control, you can upload ads your ads directly. You can upload ads in different sizes or HTML5 is also supported if you ads account meets certain requirements. 

  • Engagement ads: 

    You can also run engaging display and video ads on YouTube and on the Display Network. 

  • Gmail ads: 

    Ad type that shows directly on the top tabs of your inboxes. 


  • When ads show ?


  • When a user goes to a website that is a member of GDN, based of users search history and interest, Google Ads shows ads with the help of Adsense on that website page. Google analyzes the content of each Display Network web page or URL, considering factors such as the following:

  1. Text
  2. Language
  3. Link structure
  4. Page structure

      Based on these factors, theme of each web page is determine and used for interest based targeting.
